"What Power Is There In The Word?"
John 1:1-5
Introduction: In today's society, words are used, misused, redefined and misunderstood. Humans throw words aboutas if the are just cheap dime store trinkets, even words such as love and hate. We use words to express communication and personal meanings, to build up or destroy. Nations have been formed by words, and words have ended marriages in the eyes of human government by divorce decree. This may seem like power, yet it is a limited human power. There is The Word, from before the existence of time, that is the most powerful ever thought, spoken, or uttered. Today let us look, and hear this powerful Word there is!
I.) What is the Word? 1828 Webster's edition dictionary defines (a) word as: "An articulate or vocal sound, or a combination of articulate and vocal sounds, uttered by human voice, and by custom expressing an idea or ideas; a single component part of human speech or language..." This the traditional, logical English definition, now let us look at the "Strong's Biblical Dictionary" definition, which is the "Word" the Lord will have us look unto today. Under Truth, the Word means- 1.) Of speech, a word, uttered by a living voice, that embodies a conception or idea what someone has said, a Word of the sayings of God decree, mandate or order of the moral precepts given by God."
1.) What are the differences between the two meanings?
a.) Psalms 118:8 "It is better to trust in the Lord than put confidence in man."
b.) John 1:3-4 " 3 All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. 4 In Him was life; and the light was the light of all men.
II.) When did the Word come into being?
1.) In mankinds finite little minds, it was the Garden of Eden, when God gave Adam the job of naming the animals, it is even concievable while in fellowship with God before sin entered between Adam and God. Genesis 2:19 "And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof." These are man's first recorded words according to scripture.
2.) Now "The Word" Jesus, was in being well before then! Before the beginning! look at Genesis 1:1 "1.) In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3.) And God said, 'Let there be light: And there was light."
3.) What God said through John about the Word also known as Jesus is so awesome and powerful! John 1:1-5 "1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."
IV.) Do you see the power in the Word?
1.) God speaks, and matter, time, and life come into being. God speaks and it is so! Genesis 1:3 "And God said let there be light: and there was light." Now that is power friends!
2.) The powe to give life in place of eternal darkness and damnation, separated from God, light and eternal life without suffering, instead of being with Jesus and joy.
a.) John 1:3-5 "3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."
b.) John 1: "9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."
Conclusion: Before the fall of man, by way of sin, Adam lived in prescence of God, in His Marvelous Light, yet by way of our first parents choice of the flesh, sin and darkness came into the picture. We are natural born children of darkness, and are in dire need of Light of the Word to save us from this depraved condition. Only the power of the Word (Jesus) can bring us into the light. Are you walking in the light, or are you trusting in the powerless words and philosophies of man? Choose today friend, do you believe in He the Word of all power that saves, or the empty powerless words of man? I choose the Living Word, for I know He has the power!
